P1: Understanding how Sounds and Elements are used in Media Products

Drive - Opening Scene.

Purpose
The purpose of the music and sound effects in this scene is to create tension and excitement for the audience. It also creates an idea of what the rest of the film might be like in terms of content and style.

Elements

The scene uses a number of diegetic and non diegetic sounds to create effect. Diegetic sounds make the audience feel deeper in the film, these include police radio, car engines and door slams. Non-diegetic sounds are added for atmospheric purposes like the music, a lot of these sounds were probably added post production although some would've been recorded onset.

Meaning

The mix of sounds in the opening scene of the film enhances the atmosphere and quickly gives the audience an idea of what is going on. For example the police sirens are heard before any policy cars are seen which implies there are some sort of chase and the likelihood is that the first character seen is going to be involved. Some sounds that aren't so prominent but are still there to build up the scene. The opening of the film is set in a city so noises that aren't specifically relevant to what is going gone but are there to build atmosphere.

Adam Buxton Podcast - Louis Theroux

Purpose
There isn't much in terms of sounds in this podcast, however the song at the beginning is primarily there to draw in the audience and set the feel for the podcast. Any other sounds in the program follow this and despite the fairly serious conversation topics, the whole mood stays quite lighthearted and suits the comedic style.

Elements
This podcast contains very few atmospheric sounds and sound effects. One sound effect is a christmas bells sound which is used on a feature of the podcast called 'fact checking santa' which is added when there is a bit of information added in the post production as it wasn't said at the tim of recording. There is a short piece of music about half way through which gives a smooth transition between the break in the interview and the change in conversation subject.

Meaning
At the start of the podcast, you can hear some atmospheric sounds of footsteps on gravel over the host talking, implying that he is walking around. This makes the show feel quite relaxed and can make the audience feel more immersed in the program.

The Archers

Purpose
The sounds heard in this radio programme are there to help the audience understand an imagine and setting for the show and what the characters are doing while talking. For example, at one point you hear pig squeals when a character is talking about treating an animal for wounds. This allows the listener to know that the character is dealing with pigs, without the word actually being said.

Elements
Throughout the episode I listened to, there were primarily atmospheric sounds of birds chirping, giving the suggestion that the characters are outside in a rural area away from busy towns and traffic. The theme tune at the start of the programme, is there to let listeners know what is about to play, it is a well know radio show and most people would know that that theme is for The Archers

Meaning
This is a soap so is meant to be fairly realistic to real life, because of this there are no non natural sounds that might be put in films or something to create some sort of mood. With this the creators rely purely on the tone of the characters voices and any silence or natural sounding effects they can work into the dialogue without sounding too out of place.
